Carter cites 'Palestinian problem' as one of causes of Paris-style terror

Former U.S. president tells 'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart that occupation is 'one of the origins' of such attacks, but adds that homegrown jihadism is new development whose answer is tougher security.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, appearing Monday on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show," singled out the "Palestinian problem" as one of the causes of the sort of Islamist terror that struck Paris last week.
Asked by Stewart if he didn't agree that religion was a mere "pretext" for such attacks, Carter, a long-time critic of Israel's occupation, said, "One of the origins for it is the Palestinian problem, and this affects people who are affiliated in any way with the Arab people who live in the West Bank and Gaza – what they're doing now, what's being done to them. So I think that's part of it."
But then Carter went on to say that the West was now seeing a "new evolutionary development in terrorism," in which Western Muslims are trained to fight by jihadists in the Middle East before taking that training home, and he said the answer to it was tougher Western security measures.
"I think this event is going to waken [sic] up the people in charge of security to watch those people more than they have in the past," said Carter.
