US Secretary of State John Kerry distanced himself Thursday from comments made by an anonymous US official calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a chickenshit.” Kerry stressed that neither he nor US President Barack Obama were behind the remarks, which were “disgraceful, unacceptable, and damaging.”

The comments were published Tuesday by journalist Jeffrey Goldberg in the American magazine The Atlantic, who portrayed the rift between the United States and Israel as a “full-blown crisis.”

Speaking at a forum hosted by The Atlantic, Kerry condemned “anybody who uses language such as was used in this article,” and added that the comment expressed by the unnamed official did not reflect the views of either Obama or his administration.

The secretary of state further emphasized that the US would continue to work “quietly and effectively” in order to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We still believe it is doable, but it takes courage and it takes strength,” he said of the peace process. “Both sides have to be prepared to compromise in order to do it.”

On Wednesday the White House also denounced the derogatory remarks against Netanyahu, saying the comments had the potential to cause serious harm to Israel-US relations.

“Certainly, that’s not the administration’s view, and we think such comments are inappropriate and counterproductive,” said National Security Council spokesman Alistair Baskey, according to the Washington political journal The Hill. “Prime Minister Netanyahu and the president have forged an effective partnership, and consult closely and frequently, including earlier this month when the president hosted the prime minister in the Oval Office.”

The Atlantic report quoted a senior Obama administration official calling Netanyahu “a chickenshit,” with Goldberg adding that officials had previously called the prime minister “recalcitrant, myopic, reactionary, obtuse, blustering, pompous, and ‘Aspergery.’” He said US officials increasingly see the Israeli leader as acting out of a “near-pathological desire for career-preservation,” rather than in Israel’s national interest.

Netanyahu rejected the criticism Wednesday, saying in the Knesset plenum that he was “personally attacked purely because I defend Israel, and despite all the attacks against me, I will continue to defend our country; I will continue to defend the citizens of Israel.”

The prime minister said he remained confident that the current disagreements between the US and Israel, which center on the peace talks and the international negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, would not affect the two countries’ “deep connection.”

“I respect and appreciate the deep ties with the United States we’ve had since the establishment of the state,” he said. “We’ve had arguments before, and we’ll have them again, but this will not come at the expense of the deep connection between our peoples and our countries.”

Earlier in the day, Netanyahu’s fellow Likud parliamentarians came to his defense.

“The unrestrained criticism against Israel and its leader quoted today from ‘officials’ in the White House crossed all lines,” Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein said in remarks to the parliament Wednesday. “You can have disagreements, but in diplomatic relations — certainly among close allies — it is appropriate to maintain a respectful dialogue.”

Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz, a close ally of the prime minister, charged that insulting Netanyahu was tantamount to insulting the Israeli people.

“The prime minister of Israel is not a private [citizen] and he represents the position of the democratic and sovereign State of Israel and its constant concern for its existence and security,” Steinitz said in a statement. “Therefore offensive comments toward him are insults against the State of Israel and its citizens.”

Secretário de Estado dos EUA John Kerry distanciou-se quinta-feira de comentários feitos por um funcionário norte-americano anônimo chamando o primeiro-ministro Benjamin Netanyahu "um covarde." Kerry salientou que nem ele nem o presidente dos EUA, Barack Obama estavam por trás das observações, que eram "vergonhosas, inaceitável, e prejudicial. "

Os comentários foram publicados terça-feira pelo jornalista Jeffrey Goldberg na revista americana The Atlantic, que retratou o racha entre os Estados Unidos e Israel como uma "crise de grandes proporções."

Falando em um fórum organizado pelo The Atlantic, Kerry condenou "qualquer um que usa a linguagem como foi usada neste artigo", e acrescentou que o comentário expresso pelo funcionário não identificado não refletem as opiniões do Obama ou sua administração.

O secretário de Estado sublinhou ainda que os EUA continuarão a trabalhar "em silêncio e de forma eficaz", a fim de retomar as negociações de paz entre Israel e os palestinos.

"Nós ainda acreditamos que é factível, mas é preciso coragem e leva força", ele disse sobre o processo de paz. "Ambos os lados tem que estar preparado para comprometer a fim de fazê-lo."

Na quarta-feira a Casa Branca também denunciou os comentários depreciativos contra Netanyahu, dizendo que os comentários tinham o potencial de causar graves prejuízos às relações Israel-EUA.

"Certamente, essa não é a visão do governo, e nós pensamos que tais comentários são inadequadas e contraproducente", disse o porta-voz do Conselho de Segurança Nacional Alistair Baskey, de acordo com o jornal The Washington político Hill. "O primeiro-ministro Netanyahu eo presidente forjaram uma parceria eficaz e consultas estreitas e muitas vezes, inclusive no início deste mês, quando o presidente acolheu o primeiro-ministro no Salão Oval."

O relatório Atlântico citou um alto funcionário do governo Obama chamando Netanyahu "um covarde", com Goldberg acrescentando que as autoridades já haviam chamado o primeiro-ministro "recalcitrante, míope, reacionário, obtuso, vociferante, pomposo, e 'Aspergery". Ele disse que as autoridades norte-americanas ver cada vez mais o líder israelense como agindo por um "desejo quase patológico para a carreira-preservação", ao invés do interesse nacional de Israel.

Netanyahu rejeitou as críticas quarta-feira, dizendo no plenário do Knesset que ele foi "atacado pessoalmente puramente porque eu defender Israel, e apesar de todos os ataques contra mim, eu vou continuar a defender o nosso país; Vou continuar a defender os cidadãos de Israel ".

O primeiro-ministro disse que continua confiante de que as divergências existentes entre os EUA e Israel, que se concentram em conversações de paz e as negociações internacionais sobre o programa nuclear do Irã, não afetaria os dois países "conexão profunda."

"Eu respeito e apreciar os laços profundos com os Estados Unidos que tivemos desde o estabelecimento do Estado", disse ele. "Nós tivemos argumentos antes, e nós vamos tê-los de novo, mas isso não vai vir em detrimento da profunda ligação entre os nossos povos e nossos países."

No começo do dia, colegas parlamentares do Likud de Netanyahu veio em sua defesa.

"A crítica desenfreada contra Israel e seu líder citou hoje de 'funcionários' na Casa Branca cruzou todas as linhas", disse Yuli Edelstein Speaker Knesset em declarações ao parlamento quarta-feira. "Você pode ter divergências, mas nas relações diplomáticas - certamente entre os aliados mais próximos - é conveniente manter um diálogo respeitoso."

Ministro de Assuntos Estratégicos, Yuval Steinitz, um aliado próximo do primeiro-ministro, acusado de insultar que Netanyahu era o mesmo que insultar o povo israelense.

"O primeiro-ministro de Israel não é um [cidadão] privado e ele representa a posição do Estado democrático e soberano de Israel e sua constante preocupação para a sua existência e segurança", disse Steinitz em comunicado. "Portanto comentários ofensivos em relação a ele são insultos contra o Estado de Israel e seus cidadãos."
