Israel's airforce confirmed it had conducted strikes and fired about 30 missile s at targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday. They said they targeted "terrorist infrastructure" and destroyed several Hamas police compounds, killing more than 140 people. Israel's military pledged to continue and expand attacks if necessary.

At least 140 people were killed across the Gaza Strip as a result of massive Israeli air strikes today, 70 inside Gaza City and the rest elsewhere across the enclave, Hamas radio reported.
Hamas vowed to avenge what it called "the Israeli slaughter“.

Medical officials said 120 people had been killed in Gaza City and another 23 in Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern Gaza strip.

Thick black smoke billowed over Gaza city, where the port and security installations of the Islamist Hamas group were badly damaged.

Television footage showed dead bodies scattered on the ground and wounded and dead being carried away by distraught rescuers. There was widespread damage to buildings.

Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan said a police compound in Gaza City had been hosting a graduation ceremony for new personnel when it was attacked. Police chief Tawfiq Jabber was among the dead, the radio said.

Several of the rescuers beat their heads and shouted:"Allahu akbar (God is greatest).“ One badly wounded prostrate man quietly recited verses from the Koran.

At another site, there was a huge crater in the ground. Nearby medics carried people into an ambulance.

Witnesses said the attacks were carried out by warplanes and combat helicopters.

"All fighters are ordered to respond to the Israeli slaughter,“ said a statement by the Islamic Jihad group, echoing statements issued by Hamas and other armed factions.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned Islamist group Hamas on Thursday to stop firing rockets or pay a heavy price."I will not hesitate to use Israel's might to strike Hamas and (Islamic) Jihad,“ he told Al Arabiya television, an Arab broadcaster widely watched in Gaza.

About a dozen rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza on Friday. One accidentally struck a northern Gaza house killing two Palestinian sisters, aged five and 13, and wounding a third, Palestinian medics said.

BARACK OBAMA'S 36-hour Israeli stopover to win over Jewish voters got off to a successful start last night after he held productive meetings with the Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, and the President, Shimon Peres.

Judging by the efforts Israeli officials have gone to make the US presidential hopeful feel welcome it is obvious that the Israelis think he will win the November presidential elections.

A visit to Israel this year by Senator Obama's opponent, the Republican Party candidate John McCain, had nothing like the same importance attached to it by Israeli officials.

Senator Obama visited the Holocaust memorial museum before heading to the West Bank town of Ramallah for meetings with the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas.

Israeli media quoted senior government officials as saying that Mr Olmert would brief Senator Obama on Iran and the state of negotiations with the Palestinians and with Syria.

One anonymous source quoted in the daily Haaretz said Mr Olmert intended to give Obama a "full picture of Israeli intelligence vis-a-vis Iran, stressing the need to take rapid action to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capability".

Mr Olmert will emphasise his need for US involvement in the Syria-Israel negotiations, with an eye towards turning them into direct talks.

In a TV interview screened in the US on Tuesday, Senator Obama said Israel was right to bomb a Syrian site suspected of being a nuclear installation.

"I think there was sufficient evidence that they were developing a site using a nuclear … or using a blueprint that was similar to the North Korean model," he said. As for Israel's strategy towards Iran, Senator Obama refused to hypothesise on the possibility of an Israeli strike against Tehran and its nuclear plant.

"I think Israel has a right to defend itself, but I will not speculate on the difficult judgments they would have to make in a whole host of possible scenarios."

Before leaving Israel, Senator Obama was scheduled to go on a tour of the Western Wall, one of Judaism's holiest sites.

Condemning the actions of a Palestinian man who used a bulldozer to ram several cars in a Jerusalem suburb not far from his hotel, injuring 29 people, Senator Obama said the attack was a "reminder of what Israelis have courageously lived with on a daily basis for far too long".

Senator Obama said he would plunge into Middle East peacemaking "starting from the minute I'm sworn into office" if he won the November presidential race, but he warned there were no quick-fix solutions.

He said US involvement in peace talks must recognise "not only Israel's security concerns but also the economic hardships facing Palestinians" and said he would continue to "regard Israel as a valued ally".

"That policy is not going to change. What I think can change is the ability of the United States Government and a United States president to be actively engaged with the peace process and to be concerned and recognise the legitimate difficulties that the Palestinian people are experiencing right now," Senator Obama said.

"It's unrealistic to expect that a US president alone can suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in this region."

O presidente da França, Jacques Chirac, advertiu o primeiro-ministro de Israel, Ariel Sharon, para não enfraquecer a posição do líder palestino Yasser Arafat. Depois de uma reunião com Sharon em Paris, nesta quinta-feira, Chirac disse que minar a liderança palestina seria "contra-producente".

Nas ruas da capital francesa, cerca de 1.000 manifestantes gritavam "Sharon, assassino!" e pediam que o líder israelense seja julgado por crimes de guerra.

O primeiro-ministro de Israel realiza visita de dois dias à Alemanha e à França, em meio a temores de que o frágil cessar-fogo negociado com os palestinos possa se romper a qualquer momento.

Na Alemanha, o chanceler Gerhard Schroeder, sugeriu a Sharon a adoção de uma postura mais "flexível" em relação à contínua expansão dos assentamentos judaicos em territórios ocupados.

Assessores de Sharon disseram que seu objetivo é garantir apoio europeu para a visão israelense do conflito com os palestinos.

A tensão aumentou no Oriente Médio na quarta-feira, depois que o governo israelense anunciou que continuará atacando militantes palestinos.

A política israelense foi condenada pelos Estados Unidos e pela Europa.

A correspondente da BBC em Jerusalém, Barbara Plett, disse que os europeus respondem pela maior parte da ajuda financeira aos palestinos e vêm sendo muito mais duros nas críticas à política israelense do que os Estados Unidos.

Segundo os assessores de Sharon, o primeiro-ministro vai tentar convencer os líderes europeus a pressionarem o líder palestino Yasser Arafat a respeitar os termos do cessar-fogo, que entrou em vigor no último dia 13.

Nos últimos dias a trégua foi violada diversas vezes.

No domingo, três militantes palestinos morreram no ataque de um helicóptero israelense na Cisjordânia, e na quarta-feira, um militante palestino ficou seriamente ferido depois de ser atacado por soldados israelenses.

No mesmo dia, um civil israelense foi morto a tiros na fronteira com a Cisjordânia, próximo à cidade de Baqa El Gharbieh.

Alemanha

Sharon teve uma recepção mais calorosa na Alemanha, primeira escala de sua viagem à Europa.

Mas o chanceler alemão Gerhard Schroeder disse ter sugerido ao líder israelense que seja adotada uma postura mais "flexível" em relação à expansão dos assentamentos judaicos em territórios ocupados.

Sharon limitou-se a reafirmar o compromisso de Israel com o cessar-fogo mediado pelos Estados Unidos.

Segundo o correspondente da BBC, Israel vê a Alemanha como seu aliado mais próximo na Europa.

Irritação

Uma escala planejada na Bélgica foi suspensa porque, segundo assessores de Sharon, a agenda estava muito apertada.

Mas há informações de que o governo israelense estaria irritado porque um juiz belga investiga a possibilidade de abertura de um processo contra Sharon, por sua responsabilidade no massacre de campos de refugiados palestinos em Beirute, em 1982.

O massacre foi cometido por milícias cristãs libanesas, aliadas a Israel. Ariel Sharon era o ministro da Defesa na época.

De facto deve ser mesmo muito útil

200 toneladas

Este pedaço de terra pouco maior do que Cascais levou ontem com 200 toneladas de bombas. Vamos hoje no segundo dia de bombardeamentos. No total morreram já 280 pessoas. Não são os primeiros, provavelmente não serão os últimos. Vai-se tornando difícil mas não nos podemos esquecer.

Israeli jets target Gaza tunnels

Israel hit new targets overnight, as troops stayed on alert by the border.

Israel has bombed supply tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip in a second day of intense air raids aimed at forcing Hamas militants to halt rocket fire.

A major tunnel bringing fuel into Gaza from Egypt was among three destroyed, Palestinians say. But Israel says its jets bombed more than 40 tunnels.

Israel has also threatened to launch a ground assault and is now calling up 6,500 army reservists.

Palestinians say at least 280 people have died in the air raids.

Israel accuses Palestinian militants of using the tunnels to smuggle weapons into Gaza.

As jets pounded the southern Gaza Strip hundreds of Palestinians stormed over a fence on the Gaza-Egypt border, but Egyptian security forces prevented them entering the country.

Egyptian security forces fired shots and several injuries were reported.

At the UN, the Security Council called for an end to all violence in Gaza, including rocket attacks from Gaza.

Israel says militants have fired 110 rockets into Israel since Saturday.

Israel's mixed motives for strikes

A doctor at the Shifa hospital in Gaza City described a desperate scene, with essential medical supplies, fuel and water all running out.

Dr Khamis El Essi told the BBC that many people had been admitted with multiple injuries, such as head and back wounds. Some patients had had limbs amputated.

He said some of the injured were carers and relatives who had been sheltering in a nearby mosque hit in an Israeli raid.

The air strikes were launched on Saturday against Hamas targets in the densely-populated coastal territory, less than a week after the expiry of a six-month-long ceasefire deal with the militant group.

Israel hit targets in all Gaza's main towns, including Gaza City in the north and Khan Younis and Rafah in the south.

More than 210 targets were hit in the first 24 hours of what Israel says could be a lengthy military operation.

Israel has permanent military positions on alert outside Gaza.

"Israel will continue until we have a new security environment in the south, when the population there will not longer live in terror and in fear of constant rocket barrages," said government spokesman Mark Regev.

The high numbers of casualties made Saturday the single deadliest day in the Gaza Strip since Israel's occupation of the territory in 1967, analysts said, although no independent confirmation is available of the numbers killed.

Border confusion

Most of those killed were policemen in the Hamas militant movement, which controls Gaza, but officials said women and children also died.

The head of Gaza's police was among those killed.

Up to 700 others were wounded as missiles struck security compounds and militant bases, the officials added.

Palestine has never witnessed an uglier massacre.

The Egyptian foreign minister has accused Hamas of not allowing injured Palestinians to leave Gaza to seek treatment, even though much-needed medical supplies are waiting at the nearby El-Arish airport.

In Israel, one person was killed on Saturday in the town of Netivot, some 20km (12 miles) east of Gaza, while there were reports of several Qassam rocket strikes early on Sunday.

Rockets landed in Ashdod, Israel's largest southern city - some 38km (23 miles) from Gaza - the deepest they have ever struck inside Israel, Israeli media said. No injuries were reported.

A Palestinian youth was killed by Israeli fire in the north of the West Bank during protests against the raids, medics said.

In Gaza, Palestinian officials said two people died when a mosque was hit on Saturday night.

A BBC journalist in Gaza City said a Hamas-run security and prison compound was hit by at least three missiles on Sunday morning. Hamas said all of its security compounds in the strip were destroyed on Saturday.

'Time for fighting'

At the UN, the Security Council ended emergency talks with a call for an end to hostilities, speaking of "serious concern" at the escalation of the situation in Gaza.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak defends Gaza strike.

US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad suggested Hamas held the key to restoring calm.

"We believe the way forward from here is for rocket attacks against Israel to stop, for all violence to end," he said.

He was implicitly backed up from Cairo by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas - whose Fatah faction is a bitter rival of Hamas.

"We could have avoided what happened," Mr Abbas said, saying the Islamist group should have renewed the ceasefire before it lapsed.

The air raids came days after the truce expired and as Israel prepares for a general election in February.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak has explained the operation in stark terms, saying "the time has come to fight".

In response the exiled leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, called for a new intifada, or uprising, against Israel, while the movement's Gaza leader, Ismail Haniya, called the attack an "ugly massacre".

International reaction to the bombing has been dominated by calls for restraint.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Middle East envoy Tony Blair and the French EU presidency all called for a ceasefire.

The Israel-Hamas truce was regularly under strain and was allowed to lapse when it expired this month.

Hamas blamed Israel for the end of the ceasefire, saying it had not respected its terms, including the lifting of the blockade under which little more than humanitarian aid has been allowed into Gaza.

Israel said it initially began easing the blockade, but this was halted when Hamas failed to fulfil what Israel says were agreed conditions, including ending all rocket fire and halting weapons smuggling.

From 1967 Israel's military occupied the Gaza Strip and Jewish settlers built communities within the territory. Israel withdrew in 2005 but has maintained control of Gaza's borders.
